‘Manalive’ to premier at 2012 Conference

Chesterton Conference, ManalivePosted by on January 3, 2012

Attention! Break the Conventions. Keep the Commandments!

It’s time to start planning and getting those plane reservations.

The 31st Annual G.K. Chesterton Conference will be Aug. 2-4, 2012, at the Silver Legacy Hotel (and Casino) in Reno, Nevada.

It will be the 100th anniversary of Chesterton’s novel, Manalive.

To celebrate, we will be showing the world premiere of the movie, Manalive, directed by Joey Odendahl and starring Mark Shea and Kevin O’Brien.

Featured speakers are Dale Ahlquist and Joseph Pearce

And also: Mark Shea and Kevin O’Brien. And Joey Odendahl himself.

We will also have Jason Jones, the producer of the movie Bella.

Julian Ahlquist will be speaking on “Chesterton and Aristotle”

Ralph Wood of Baylor University will be speaking on his new book Chesterton and The Nightmare Goodness of God.

The theme of the conference will be a pivotal line from Manalive: “Break the Conventions. Keep the Commandments.”

Playing a major role in the hosting duties will be the Chesterton Society of Nevada, led by Sharon Parker. We are happy to announce that His Excellency Bishop Randolph Calvo will be saying Mass for us at the Cathedral, which is only two blocks from the hotel in downtown Reno. The area features lots of wonderful things to see and do, including beautiful Lake Tahoe, historic Virginia City, a variety of art galleries, family friendly activities (safari zoo, water park, Exploratorium), and a monastery and a convent. That’s right. What did you think you’d find in Reno?

It will be the best conference we’ve ever had.

We are going to establish the schedule very early and make registration available very early and publicize the event heavily—but let’s start getting the word out right now. So tell your friends!

I’ve just re-viewed last night’s episode (10/16/11) of “G.K. Chesterton: The Apostle of Common Sense” on EWTN. I am so blessed by its insights and wisdom! I recorded it so as to view it repeatedly in order to contemplate it’s truths. I’ve also decided to join the American Chesterton Society, and consequently have found this site. I am so pleased to know of the upcoming conference in Reno, Nevada, and look forward to it.

Looking forward to seeing everyone here in Reno this August. You must see Lake Tahoe if you come, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world!

  6. Ana says:

Will there be a bus chartered to get folks from Reno to Lake Tahoe? Distance … 60 miles or so.

  7. Ana says:

whoa … only posted for one day and the Silver Legacy Hotel is all booked up for those dates … any alternative suggestions? Maybe the Society rents a (large, many roomed)house somewhere?

  8. Sean P. Dailey says:

Ana, why would we want to bus folks from Reno to Lake Tahoe?

Second, I’ll check, but I assume that the organizers have rooms blocked off for the conference.

    thanks,
    Sean Dailey

What time will the convention start? I want to book a room at the SL but not sure if I shouls check in on the 1st or 2nd. I have animals and can’t be away too long.

Convention usually opens for registration around 4:00 or 5:00 pm on Thursday (Aug 2), with the first talk after dinner.

There are plenty of rooms available at the Silver Legacy Hotel. Call them at 1-800-687-8733. The Chesterton Society has arranged a discount for us: the discount code is ACS812.
