G.K. Chesterton was one of the most well-known and beloved writers of his time. Yet he has been strangely neglected today. This book is the perfect introduction to Chesterton. Dale Ahlquist is an able guide who takes the reader through twelve of Chesterton’s most important books as well as the famous Father Brown stories.

One of the problems with approaching Chesterton is that he was so prolific that the reader is simply overwhelmed. But Ahlquist makes the literary giant accessible, highlighting Chesterton’s amazing reach, keen insight, and marvelous wit. Each chapter is liberally spiced with Chesterton’s striking quotations.

An overview of Chesterton’s most important books, liberally spiced with quotations. This is a book version of the first fifteen episodes of The Apostle of Common Sense. An excellent introduction and re-introduction to G.K. Chesterton. This is terrific companion reading to the EWTN series, G.K. Chesterton: The Apostle of Common Sense.

Joseph Pearce, author of Literary Converts writes, “Dale Ahlquist is one of the most respected Chesterton scholars in the world and there are few more qualified to illustrate the timeless wit and wisdom of the legendary GKC. This volume is an excellent introduction to one of the giant figures of the Catholic Literary Revival.”

  1. Eric Johnson

This is the perfect primer for Chesterton! After spending a year trying to wrap my head around Everlasting Man, I read this book in just a few days (okay, an airplane round trip). Suddenly, Chesterton opened up for me like never before, and I knew exactly what book I wanted to read next. I love that Dale Ahlquist gives an overview of so many works of GKC, so that the reader understands the way Chesterton thinks and writes, how to read him, and then which of his books will be the perfect first read for them. Awesome.

  2. JoAnna Wahlund

Terrific book. A great overview of Chesterton for the beginner.

  3. Don Ragsdale

    G. K. Chesterton: The Apostle of Common Sense is quite simply superb! Dale Ahlquist introduces his friend and brilliant writer, G. K. Chesterton, by surveying some of Chesterton’s many great works. This book is well-written, informative and truly a joy to read. Quoted throughout this volume are Chesterton’s profound insights and timeless truths all expressed with his customary wit and literary fluency. For those who are seeking an introduction to this extremely relevant and highly accomplished writer, look no further. This book is it!
